Glitzy, chic, cosy cafes, sprouting all over my hometown Johor Bahru to enable “Instagram-worthy” photos. As gentrification sets in the past decade, it’s getting harder to find spaces familiar. The city may be modernized but hopefully the cultural identity remains within it. I had to stop by Singgah Selalu, (as the name suggests) one of the frequented hangouts for good food, and shishas, during younger days. Not sure if they’re still operating someplace else but it felt odd to be in what was once a cool place now reduced to broken shards of glasses and ruins filled with trash.
